"A Big Year and Bird Conservation"
About Malkolm . . .
Malkolm Boothroyd is a 17 year old from Whitehorse, Yukon. He's been a birder since age seven, (after a journey to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) and an environmental activist and a since age 8, when he dressed up as a baby caribou and joined a protest against British Petroleum's plans to drill in the Arctic Refuge.
Since then Malkolm has found ways to combine conservation efforts
with birdwatching adventures. Last year Malkolm and his parents cycled 13,000 miles on their “Bird Year”. They succeeded in raising over 25,000 dollars for bird
conservation and proved that you don’t need to burn fossil fuels to rack up a big year list. Malkolm continues to be addicted to long distance cycling. This summer he cycled from Whitehorse to Ottawa as part of Pedal for the Planet, to call for climate leadership from Canadian Politicians.
In Malkolm’s “Bird Year” slide presentation he recounts adventures that he and his parents had during their fossil fuel free big year. They experienced everything from sailing into Monterey Bay on a small craft warning day, to camping in a graveyard for fear of drug dealers. He’ll tell about the birds he found , including his discovery of a Flame-colored Tanager.
