Hey I'm Bret and nature is basically my life! Of course, growing up with an awesome birder dad as a beginning mentor helps a bit. For about 5 years now, my bird identification skills have increased greatly and I have developed an admiration for all wildlife far beyond birds. Dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies, snakes, frogs, mammals, lizards, and plants have also captured my interest over the years. My current obsession exists in Odonata. With Larry Rosche, Jen Brumfield, and Judy Semroc as my mentors, I have obtained a keen interest in identifying and documenting dragonflies and damselflies.

I have recently gotten big on ABA, state, and year lists. My current lists include: ABA= 509; OH= 291; Yard= 137; ABA 2008= 392; OH 2009= 190. I havent be able to do much birding this year due to my accelerating rowing career. But I can take pride in beating Jen Brumfield in our '08 Ohio year list competition. ha!

Jaegers!

I was able to go out and do some lakefront birding this week: Huron on saturday and Mentor Headlands on sunday. Huron was miserable with powerful winds, crashing waves, and heavy rains. But that didn't stop the birds from having a good time. When the gulls start to freak out, something good is out there. And when the gull pirates show up, you know the party is crashed.

Perry Park was the place to be in 2006, certainly the year of the jaeger, with possibilities of seeing up to 7 birds at a time!… Continue

lorain impoundment

I called gabe leidy today and he said he had two nelson's sharptailed sparrows at lorain impoundment. he said one of the birds had paler gray streaks on its back unlike the white streaks of the interior race. i stopped there and ran into larry richardson and jan auburn. i told them where gabe saw the birds and we flushed out both birds. one of the sparrows was noticeably duller than the other. the other bird was very bright orange with white streaks on its back. the duller bird may have been of… Continue

Hey Rowie McRowerson~ How ya doin? : )
Are you still rowing??!!!! And, if so, have you ever thought about where in the world you could be by now if you hadn't turned back, but just kept on going? : ) DEEP THOUGHTS.......
Anyway, just wanted to say hi and see how you're doing. I heard your Dad was having some back trouble. Hope he's all right. Tell all the McCartys I said hello!
And, now the burning question-----are you going on the November field trip? I can't go! : ( But i hope you are! It sounds like it's gonna be a good one.
See ya!

And by the way, I also enjoyed your Odonata photos. Maybe at some point you could mention the places in Ohio you took those photos.

Golden-crowned Kinglet sighting, eh? That's one of my favorite birds. Your GCKI sighting is right on schedule. The books "Birds of Toledo" and "Birds of Ohio" say Golden-crowned Kinglets normally return to the lakefront by September 15-22. Largest concentration of GCKI occur during October. Because of an unusual combination of weather conditions on October 7, 1954, at Put-in-Bay, Dr. Milton B. Trautman estimated 25,000 to 50,000 passed over South Bass Island.
